To the editor:
Alas, I will no longer write to local officials or even the press about problems in the neighborhood. The dog crap and unruly pets off their leash coming towards me will not be mentioned. Neither will the speeding cars with their loud music or the chickens and roosters and all the auto break-ins. And although these affect my quality of life and yours, I am tired of complaining. Yes, I am tired of the many camper vans and campers in them, and the car carriers and a boat -- yes a boat, now two -- and commercial vans, trucks and taxis parked all over Riverdale.
No one listens and nothing is done. The city can make a lot of money ticketing these illegally parked vehicles. There is a seven-day limit for parking in one space and there are no overnight laws for commercial vehicles.
I turn the reins over to those of you who want them and might be bothered.
This is a country I once knew and loved, and it is falling apart. The U.S., "My country 'tis of thee." There are changes to democracy I never believed could happen. There are dictators and wanna-be kings I didn't think I'd have to live with, listen to or even look at.
There are new and more meaningful "complaints." War, deportations, banned books, health concerns and millions more, including my own aging. I think these issues are more horrible and life threatening. Left with little energy and fewer years ahead of me, I'll concentrate on these.
Sorry if you will miss me. I'll be around, though.
