Still waiting for a call back

(re: “So, has Bowman abandoned Riverdale?” Oct. 21)

I was inspired to write about your recent story focused on U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s availability to constituents. It cited Ms. Kathy Solomon of Northwest Bronx Indivisible saying she’s “heard it’s easy to contact Bowman’s team, and his constituent office has been good about returning emails and phone calls.”

I have actual experience — and the evidence to prove it — of having unsuccessfully attempted to meet the congressman over the last eight months. I was an early supporter who campaigned and voted for Bowman, in part because I had long experienced the indifference of his predecessor, Eliot Engel, to my ongoing international issue.

I remain ideologically in-sync with Bowman and The Squad, and I support his national agenda. I am not a big donor, which should make no difference in a democracy.

However, with hardly any support from my own government, I am now in the ninth year of a struggle for justice with a foreign state — supposedly and ally nation.

I have appealed to the U.S. Consular Service Office in that state, to both my senators, to Engel — then chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — and to the U.S. State Department in Washington.

The U.S. government has largely disregarded my legitimate requests for assistance.

I first reached out to the congressman on April 4, and had numerous exchanges with his team, to no avail. The last response I received was July 21 stating that “we are still processing your meeting request and will circle back in the next few weeks.”

That was more than three months ago.

I hereby request again that Congressman Bowman please schedule a virtual meeting with me at his earliest convenience. He already has received a summary and documentation about my situation.

Thank you, congressman, for your attention and consideration.
