THE FRIENDS OF VAN CORTLANDT PARK is asking the community for help in obtaining a $20,000 grant for maintenance and renovation of the park’s hiking trails. The Friends’ project is a finalist in a competition sponsored by Tom’s of Maine, makers of natural products like toothpaste and soap. Visitors can vote for their favorite projects at the company’s Web site www.tomsofmaine.com. Above, a trail winds through the forest east of the park’s stables.
