LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Women already have no power

There are too many “alternative facts” in the recent letter to the editor from Mr. George Silos to dignify with a point-by-point refutal.

I am outraged at The Riverdale Press — not because the editor published a letter without any merit — but because it published it in a prominent part of the page, with a bigger headline than the other letters.

Mr. Silos affirms that power “given” to women by “ignorant” Western society men resulted in “cirrhosis of the liver” caused by “increased drinking,” as well as lung cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, depression and suicide being “at an all-time high” among women.

It is funny Mr. Silos forgot to mention that these are also “at an all-time high” in men, even when they have most of the power in Western societies. You can just look at the composition of our Congress and U.S. Supreme Court — and the fact that no women have ever been elected president of this country — to realize we live in a “patriarchal” society, albeit not “patriarchal” enough for Mr. Silos.

I am sure many other (female) readers feel as outraged as I feel, and disappointed with this newspaper, which I support with my subscription.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The letter in question was given equal consideration to any other letter submission, published as part of the newspaper’s open submission policy. Its headline was comparable in size to other published submissions on the page.
