Nice words, and in a perfect world you'd be correct, but "democracy" in the USA (which is not a democracy but a constitutional republic) has been dead for a minimum of 100 years and possibly more. The two major parties have been hijacked by corporate interests, and are both drowning in corruption. There are only rules for the plebes, while Wall Street and their paid whores in office (Andrew Cuomo, Barack Obama, Ted Cruz, Boener etc) all break laws with impunity.

Unfortunately Mr. Birnbaum, the way i see it is that by signing any petitions, you are only giving legitimacy to a system that has long since forgotten about you. Those who still believe or participate in this "electoral" system are suffering from battered wife syndrome.
