Police shot and killed one man and left another hospitalized on Tuesday after a car chase that started in Riverdale, according to police and news reports.

Police said officers from the 50th Precinct tried to pull over a Nissan for driving recklessly on Henry Hudson Parkway and Riverdale Avenue at 11:46 a.m.

The driver then sped away, leading police on a chase in which they drove south on the northbound side of the parkway at one point. They then entered the Saw Mill Parkway in Yonkers, where they crashed into another vehicle near Exit 4.

As a 36-year-old suspect ran from his car into Tibbetts Brook Park, police fatally shot him in the chest. The New York Daily News quoted a witness as saying the man had a gun.

The other suspect, a 25-year-old man, was taken to the St. Barnabas Hospital with minor injuries following his arrest at the scene of the accident. Two officers from the 50th Precinct were taken to a Montefiore Medical Center for observation, according to the NYPD’s Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Affairs.

The Saw Mill Parkway remained closed in both directions for hours after the shooting while around 100 officers from New York City, Westchester County and Yonkers combed the vicinity for evidence. The identities of the suspects and the officers were not released as of press time.
