Occupy the Bronx for a living wage

Posted

Last week, this page encouraged readers of The Press to write, call and e-mail City Council Speaker Christine Quinn to pressure her to bring living wage legislation to the council floor for a vote.

We likened the struggle for a living wage mandate for Bronxites who work in jobs made possible by heavily subsidized government developments to the growing national chorus calling for bailouts to reach average citizens.

This week, we are pleased to say that Ms. Quinn has revived the issue with another hearing on the amended legislation and that Bronxites have once again let city officials know where they stand.

The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition has scheduled a rally to hear testimonies from residents on issues from struggling schools to living wage legislation as part of Occupy the Bronx.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, the crowd will meet from noon to 2 p.m. at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, 2345 University Ave. at Fordham Road.
