Puerto Rican pride fills Grand Concourse

Posted

Heavy rain kept all but the most ardent from the 30th annual Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday. But spirits were high among those who lined the sidewalks of the Grand Concourse from East 188th Street to Van Cortlandt Avenue.

Observers weren’t the only ones who took shelter beneath the concourse’s many awnings. Plenty of dancers sought refuge in dry areas before they were on — but groups like the Unity Dancers shined in spite of the precipitation.

The parade is considered one of the borough’s biggest cultural events. It precedes the even larger Puerto Rican Day parade in Manhattan, scheduled for Sunday, June 12.
