Science fiction tales inspire E-book author

Edna Harris laughed as she recalled her first creative endeavor: a sitcom about a talking dog named Fluff who travels to outer space, written at age five.

“It wasn’t as cliche an idea as it is now,” said Ms. Harris.

In February, the Spuyten Duyvil based author and television producer traveled back in time to her science fiction roots with the release of her new e-book. Self-published on Amazon, The Fantasy and Other SciFi Tales is a collection of four science fiction stories that span the five boroughs of New York City.

“It’s such an urban, big city, so to have sci-fi events happening here is really fun,” said Ms. Harris, 37, who was inspired by movies like Back to the Future and E.T., as well as episodes of The Twilight Zone, many of which are set in small towns rather than metropolitan areas.

Ms. Harris chose to self-publish after discovering Amazon’s independent publishing capabilities. As e-book popularity has grown, the service has become an outlet for writers like Ms. Harris who are looking for a quick turnaround on their creative projects.

“It seemed like an interesting way to get the book out there,” said Ms. Harris. Her e-book struck her a deal with a literary agent for her next book, a memoir about comedian Henry “Henny” Youngman, a family friend Ms. Harris remembers as “hysterical.”

Writing for the silver screen at a young age was an almost quotidian pursuit for Ms. Harris, whose show business family gave her a tape-recorder before she could write, to record  her ideas. Her father, who passed away when Ms. Harris was young, was a theatrical agent; her mother is a producer and agent.

At the age of 9, Ms. Harris landed a role in a Broadway version of The Marriage of Figaro, starring actor Christopher Reeve. At age 11, she acted in a made-for-television movie called Gryphon.

As an older teen, her interests shifted to poetry, stand-up comedy and improvisation. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan in 1999, with a BFA in filmmaking,
