South Riverdale Little League opens registration

The South Riverdale Little League is urging families to register online and save time during this year’s player assessment days at the David A. Stein Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, 660 West 237 Street.

The league offers seven divisions open to children based on age, skill-level and interest.

Tee ball is open to four- to five-year-old girls and boys and first time 6 year olds. It is loosely structured and not appropriate for any children who already have significant baseball experience. No score is kept, there are no outs and each child bats every time the team is up.

Pee-Wee is for six-year-old girls and boys, first time seven- year-olds and eight-year- olds who are not yet ready for kid-pitch baseball. In Pee-Wee there is a friendly adult pitching. No score is kept, but the children play regular baseball.

Eight- to 10-year-old girls and boys may join the minor league. A seven-year-old may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. The kids pitch and play a competitive game with an emphasis on skills acquisition. 10- year-olds will not be allowed to pitch in the minors.  Wins and losses are recorded. There will be playoffs at the end of the season.

Minor league softball is for girls only, from 7-10.  Coaches pitch and/or kids pitch and play a competitive game with an emphasis on skills acquisition. Wins and losses are recorded. There will be playoffs at the end of the season.

Major league softball is for girls only, from 11-14. The kids pitch and play a competitive game with an emphasis on skills acquisition. Wins and losses are recorded. There will be playoffs at the end of the season.

Major league baseball for girls and boys is open to 10- to 12-year-olds. The kids pitch and play a competitive game with an emphasis on skills acquisition. The level of play is generally much higher than that in the Minors. 13 year olds who are not ready for the big field (seniors) can stay in the majors, but will not be allowed to pitch. Wins and losses are recorded. There will be playoffs at the end of the season.

Senior league is open to girls and boys, 13-16 years old. The kids pitch and play a competitive game with an emphasis on skills acquisition.  16-year- olds are not permitted to pitch.  Wins and losses are recorded. There will be playoffs at the end of the season.

Assessment days will be held for Softball, Minors, Majors, and Seniors. All players must attend assessment day or make other arrangements to be assessed.

The purpose of this day is to evaluate the skill level of the children for their safety and to make teams as equal as possible.  All registered players will be assigned to a team and play.

All ages quoted refer to the age the child will be on Apr. 1, 2015 except those children born after Apr. 30, 2005.

New Little League age requirements for these children refer to the age the child will be on December 31.

Senior and minor leaguers will be assessed on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Major leaguers and all softball leagues will be assessed on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Tee ball and pee wee players may register on either day.

Registration for Senior, Major, Minor Baseball, and Major Softball closes on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015.
