More than 100 people gathered in the lobby of the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale on Sunday, April 19, to pay tribute to Edith Sobel, a founder of the Riverdale Jewish Community Council who died recently. Her name was added to the Tree of Life Memorial in the synagogue’s main lobby.

Speakers praised her courage, social activism, feistiness and passion on behalf of the Jewish people. Ms. Sobel escaped Europe before the Holocaust. Her husband, Sam Sobel, portrayed their life together and told of Ms. Sobel’s dedication to helping children with special needs and others who needed someone to champion their cause. Ms. Sobel helped start Project Hope, a group that supplies food on Jewish holidays to Jews in need. As chairman of the synagogue’s social action and Israel projects committee, she was at the forefront of many initiatives, campaigns and drives that worked for social justice and equality.
