Tornado cleanup isn’t over in Riverdale

One hundred sixty-one trees were lost during the historic tornado on July 25, but a week later, Riverdale has more of three things than ever: sun, wood chips and insurance claims adjusters.

“It’s all cleaned up, just it’s very sunny now. It’s not shaded anymore and that’s the sad part,” said Luciano Moresco, a resident of Ladd Road who lost many trees in his backyard.

It took a few long days for the Ramiro Tree Service to chop all of them, but all that remains now are wood chips and sawdust.

Now that he’s finally able to walk around his house, Mr. Moresco can see what needs repair. His home’s worst injury is the damage to the roof of the garage. The 50-year old ceramic tile that covered it was smashed and the mold for the tile costs $8,000 by itself, he said. Mr. Moresco wasn’t sure what the total bill for fixing everything would be, but in addition to the garage, he needs part of his roof rebuilt, windows to be fixed and parts of the exterior to be patched. An adjuster is scheduled to come by this week.

Mercedes clobbered

Doug Holtz lives down the road. During the storm, a tree landed on his two Mercedes, totaling one and doing $10,000 in damage to the other. He also experienced significant damage to his house and had to pay $10,000 to remove the fallen trees from his cars and house. In all, Mr. Holtz estimated it will cost about $40,000 to return his property to the way it was. He already made claims for the cars with his insurance company and a claims adjuster for his house was scheduled to visit this week.

“On the upside, our view of the Hudson has gotten better. But I wish I didn’t have to get it in that way,” he said.

But it’s a truly ill wind that blows nobody any good.
