Homeless for the holidays

Though he has no address, Kenneth Porter calls Riverdale home, spending his days along a short stretch of Broadway near the end of the subway line. For him, Christmas and New Year's are not special occasions, but photographer Joshua Bright found that he's still grateful for every day

WHEN THE mercury drops, Kenneth Porter seeks shelter at the laundromat on Broadway. At night he sleeps on the subway. He refuses to go to a homeless shelter because he said it's too restrictive.

MANY PASSERSBY on Broadway have come to know Kenneth Porter over the years.

IF HE ISN'T told to leave by the manager at Burger King, Mr. Porter will spend some time warming up there and counting his change.

KENNETH PORTER smokes discarded cigarette butts he finds on the No. 1 elevated subway platform. He spends much of his time on Broadway begging for change and food.
