Kaplan accepts local students

Yaxeny Hernandez-Ravelo and Shaquana Darden, both from greater Riverdale, have been accepted to the Kaplan Leadership Program for the 2023-24 academic year.

Hernandez majors in computer science at Hostos Community College. Her dream is to promote diversity and inclusivity in the tech industry. She is passionate about research and is inspired to break gender barriers.

Darden majors in human services at Bronx Community College. Her big dream is to establish a shelter for pregnant couples and families in need that offers services like housing support, counseling, financial literacy, education, and employment opportunities. Her long-term goal is to become a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in therapy

Established in 2006, the Kaplan Leadership Program helps high-potential, low-income and historically underrepresented community college students complete their associate’s degree and successfully transfer and go on to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree at the nation’s most highly-selective schools.

Erin Arroyo named RA at SUNY Purchase

Erin Arroyo of greater Riverdale, who is studying psychology at Purchase, has been chosen as a resident assistant for the 2023-24 academic year.

Resident assistants play a vital role in creating a sense of belonging and support for fellow students. They are responsible for a wide range of duties, including organizing events, offering peer support, addressing concerns, and enforcing policies. These responsibilities not only enhance their leadership skills but also help them develop strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Purchase College, part of SUNY, was founded in 1967 by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller.
