Mount Saint Vincent women kickers claim Skyline title

This time of year is not only busy with professional football or college basketball. It is also crunch time for college soccer with high stakes on the line in win-or-go-home conference tournaments.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent earned its latest banner Nov. 4 when the 13-5-3 women’s soccer team defeated the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 1-0 for the Skyline title. Caitlyn Thompson was the difference-maker for the Dolphins as the freshman striker converted the game-winning goal in the 26th minute.

Thompson finished the tournament with four goals and one assist.

The Mount’s sweep in the playoffs was noteworthy for out-scoring their three opponents 11-0.

The Dolphins beat Mount Saint Mary College 6-0 in the quarterfinals before downing No. 2 seed Farmingdale State College 4-0 on the road.

Sophomore goalkeeper Javiera Sanchez notched three saves in the championship win. Sanchez has 10 shutouts this season and her 0.011-goals against average is a single-season program record.

The Mount lost 3-1 against Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the road in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament.

Manhattan College men’s soccer

Manhattan College’s postseason goals are still alive following the men’s soccer team’s 2-0 win over Niagara in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament. The two goals came from sophomore Henry Hamilton and senior Sebastiano Musu.

Manhattan won its first five games in MAAC play before playing to three losses, one tie, and one win after that.

As a result, the Jaspers missed out on a No. 2 seed and an opening round bye in the playoffs.

Now that Manhattan has advanced, the Jaspers’ attention turns to one-seed Iona.

Manhattan has already lost to Iona 2-0 in the regular-season finale.

The semi-final meeting on Nov. 9 is a rematch of last season’s semi-finals when Iona outlasted Manhattan 1-0.

The Jaspers are gunning for the first MAAC title in program history.

Battle of Bronx set for Nov. 16 on road

After falling to George Washington, 55-49, for its first loss of the season last Saturday at Draddy Gymnasium, the women Manhattan College basketball team gears up for the Battle of the Bronx.

In the game against George Washington, the Jaspers started off strong through the first-two quarters, including a 7-0 run.

They led 19-10 after the first quarter and kept it up to take a 26-20 advantage into the locker room.

But George Wahington was able to pick up its momentum in the second half and pull ahead of Manhattan.

For the Jaspers, Nitzan Amar had 12 points, five assists and five rebounds.

The women will play their first road game of the season at Fordham University Nov. 16. Tip-off is located in Rose Hill Gym at 7 p.m.

The last time out, the two teams played on Dec. 3, 2022, with Fordham winning at home, 65-55.

Through the last two games, Fordham defeated University of Albany, 66-63, and Adelphi, 70-43.

They were led in scoring by Emy Hayford in both games, who had 22 points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal against Albany.

For Adelphi, Hayford scored 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Fordham lost their first game of the season to Miami 78-39.

Last season, the Jaspers finished 4-9 in away games.

Manhattan will continue to play on the road as it goes to big east competitor St. John’s for a Sunday afternoon match-up. Tip-off at Carnesecca Arena is set for 2 p.m.
