Ultan gives ethnic diversity lecture

Renowned historian and professor Lloyd Ultan will give a lecture on “The Bronx, Historic Ethnic Diversity” Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center at 3880 Sedgwick Ave.

Ultan, who teaches at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, is a historian with a grasp on the history of the Bronx. He will lead attendees on a journey by exploring the diverse tapestry of the Bronx. The Bronx historian emeritus, who is the author of several books on the history of the borough, will delve into the changing ethnic landscapes that have shaped it.

“We are honored to welcome Professor Ultan to our center to share his wealth of knowledge about the Bronx’s rich history,” said Stuart Harris, president of the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center.

The event is made possible through the sponsorship of Alan Paul Katz, who is using the event to honor the memory of his parents, Rabbi Dr. Henry and Faye Cheryl Katz.

The lecture, which starts at 2 p.m., will be held in the ballroom of the center. Reservations are optional but requested. Admission is free and open to the public.

Neighborhood House fundraiser tix cut

The Riverdale Neighborhood House is reconstituting its annual fundraiser this year with a big discount, according to John Kelly, a board member.

The “Cocktails in the Garden” event will take place Thursday, Oct. 5 under the stars at the Riverdale Neighborhood House, according to Kelly. Tickets will be one-third the price of last year’s $450 per person. They will be $150 per person.

The reason for the huge discount, according to a news release, is the organization wants to attract a broader swath of participants.

“Less is often more,” said RNH executive director Andrew Belton.

The event is essential to the Riverdale Neighborhood House’s annual fundraising campaign and its marketing efforts throughout greater Riverdale, Belton said.

“There is so much good here at RNH — in our people and our services — and everyone who experiences us recognizes that feeling straight away,” he added. “Now, for our biggest fundraising effort of the year, we want to capture and build on that magic by including more people than ever who can and want to support our mission.”

Board chair Julia Hodgson explained the reasoning behind the cheaper admission cost.

“We try to be very aware of what the organization is and what our community needs RNH to be,” she said.

“That starts with accessibility and creating space. Like everything else we do, our fundraising efforts need to be reflective of who we serve. No is pretending $150 is cheap, but we hope it is a fairer stretch.”
