The teen charged with gunning down Angellyh Yambo, formerly of Riverdale, in a random shooting in April 2022 has changed his plea to guilty in her murder. He now faces 15 years to life.

Jeremiah Ryan is charged with shooting Yambo outside her school, University Prep Charter School in Melrose, as classes let out. Police have said the shooting took place because of an argument between gang members. Yambo was shot by a stray bullet and another classmate was wounded.

According to family members, Ryan will be formally sentenced Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. when he returns to court.

Since Yambo’s death, a street — Angellyh Yambo Way — has been co-named after the teen near 3340 Bailey Place where she used to live with her father, Manuel Yambo. He is a doorman at The Glen Briar. The rest of her family was at the co-street naming, including her great aunt Mary Hernandez; Fidel Molina, her older brother; and Yanely Henriquez, her mother.

Additionally, U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres has proposed the Angellyh Yambo Gun Free Zone Act that would ban the possession and transfer of ghost guns while expanding gun-free school zones to 5,000 feet from 1,000 feet for all public, private and charter schools and early childhood education centers.
