Rising Stars

The Junior Rising Stars, a children's theater company at the Riverdale YM-YWHA, presents a new production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, in the Y's Neuwirth Theatre, located at 5625 Arlington Ave.

Performances will take place today, Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, June 1, at 4 p.m.; and Thursday, June 5, at 7 p.m. The show follows the biblical tale of Jacob's favored son Joseph and the resulting betrayal of his 11 jealous brothers.

Tickets for the show cost $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and $10 for children 9 and younger.

Nutrition lecture

Riverdale Senior Services, 2600 Netherland Ave., will host a lecture from 6 to 8 p.m. by Lynn Klein, a holistic health counselor with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, a Columbia University affiliate. Her talk, entitled "Alternative Approaches to Nutrition for Optimum Health and Well-Being" will be accompanied by a salmon dinner. The fee is $5.

Addressing grads

Antiguan Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs Betrand Joseph will speak at Lehman College's 40th Commencement exercises at 10:30 a.m., at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West.

Mr. Joseph, who will receive the Alumni Achievement Award at the ceremony, earned a B.A. in political science and master's in U.S. History from Lehman College.

Fruit diet

The Marble Hill Senior Center, 5365 Broadway, will host a nutrition lecture at 11 a.m. The lecture will offer ways to add fruit to your summer diet. At 1 p.m. a birthday party will be held for seniors with May birthdays. For more info call 718-562-8551.

Career symposium

Lehman College will host a symposium from 9:30 a.m. to noon to discuss ways of attracting more men from diverse backgrounds to careers in social work at the college, 250 Bedford Park Boulevard.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the East Dining Room of the Music Building.

According to a 2006 Workforce Study, conducted nationally, 81 percent of licensed practitioners holding master's in social work degrees are non-Hispanic women, six percent are African-American women and one percent are Latino women.

Farm trip

On Thursday, June 5, city public schools will be closed and the Riverdale YM-YWHA will take schoolchildren to Green Meadows Farm in Floral Park, N.Y. to see more than 300 farm animals. Children should bring a brown bag lunch.

The fee is $60 for members and $75 for non-members. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline for registration is Saturday, May 31. Late registration will incur a $10 late fee per day. For more information call Barbara at 718-548-8200, ext. 206.

Author speaks at Y

Tania Grossinger will visit the Riverdale YM-YWHA, 5625 Arlington Ave., at 11 a.m., to talk about her memoir, Growing Up at Grossinger's, reissued this month in paperback.

A travel writer and public relations consultant, Ms. Grossinger grew up at Grossingers, the famous Catskill borscht belt hotel - and, she writes, a great place to meet a nice Jewish girl.

Legal clinic

The Riverdale Senior Center, 2600 Netherland Ave., will host a Pro-Bono Law Clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Elder law attorneys will be available to discuss wills and estates, long term care planning, property, health care and more. Interested members can complete an information sheet in the front office.

Knitting class

The Riverdale-Yonkers Ethical Culture Society will hold a knitting get together from 1 to 3 p.m. at the meetinghouse, 4450 Fieldston Road. Jill Staats, an experienced knitter, will lead the group. Participants should bring knitting materials but some needles and yarn will be available.

The Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture's Uptown Coffeehouse will present folk singer/songwriter Rod MacDonald at 5 p.m. The performance will take place at the meeting house, 4450 Fieldston Road. Admission is $15 and Bronx Cultural Cards are accepted

Half day of fun

On June 2, city public schools will be closed for half days. The Riverdale YM-YWHA's KidsSpace After School Program will be available to pick up students at PS 81 and PS 24.

For $20, the children will be bussed to the Y where they will eat kosher pizza and staff will provide a day of activities.

The Marble Hill Senior Center, 5365 Broadway, will host a women's only belly dancing class at 11 a.m. At 12:45 p.m. the art history film Museum Masters will be shown with history lessons on 17th Century Painting.

Photo workshop

The Riverdale YM-YWHA, 5625 Arlington Ave., will host a continuation of its workshop, The Art of Digital Photography from 7 to 9 p.m.

Designed for ages 15 and up and lead by professional portraiture photographer Arnie Alder, the workshop is intended to take the mystery out of taking and printing quality digital photographs. Mr. Alder will teach a combination of portrait photography and digital workflow.

The class will continue June 17, June 24, and July 1.

The fee for four classes is $100 for members and $120 for nonmembers.

Creative writing

The Marble Hill Senior Center, 5365 Broadway, will continue its creative writing course with instructor Mildred Kramer.

Wed. June 4

Film screening

A Trumpet in the Wadi, a film in Hebrew, Arabic and Russian with English subtitles, will be screened at the Riverdale YM-YWHA, 5625 Arlington Ave., at 7:30 p.m.

Based on the novel by leading Israeli author Sami Michael, the film tells the story of 30-year-old Huda who lives with her Christian-Arab family in the coastal city of Haifa, Israel.

The movie will be followed by a Russian and Israeli tea and dessert reception and live music by local Russian and Jewish musicians. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online at www.riverdaley.org.

Reiki lecture

Riverdale Senior Services, 2600 Netherland Ave., will host a lecture on Reiki from 6 to 8 p.m. Reiki is a healing practice based on the concept of restoring balance to the body's life energy.

Rena Ginat, a holistic registered nurse, will deliver the lecture, titled "The Healing Benefits of the Reiki Lifestyle."

Suicide Walk

Starting sundown June 7 till sunrise June 8, participants will walk 20 miles in New York City to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in the Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk.

The proceeds will fund vital research, suicide prevention, awareness programs and support for survivors of suicide loss both locally and nationally. In New York State, nearly 1,200 people die by suicide each year. It is the third leading cause of death the across the state for those between 15 and 24-years-old. Nationally suicide is a serious health problem that claims a life every 16 minutes.
