Answers to citizenship test

In the editorial, “Citizenship Day is just as important as Flag Day,” we asked you to take a short U.S. citizenship test. Here are the answers:

  • What is the supreme law of the land? The Constitution.
  • What does the Constitution do? It sets up the government, it defines the government, and it protects basic rights of Americans.
  • The idea of self-government is in the first three words of the Constitution. What are these words? “We the People.”
  • What is an amendment? A change or addition to the U.S. Constitution.
  • What do we call the first 10 amendments to the Constitution? The Bill of Rights.
  • What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment? Answers here could be speech, religion, assembly, press, and to petition the government.
  • How many amendments does the Constitution have? 27.
  • What did the Declaration of Independence do? It announced and declared our independence from Great Britain.
  • What are two rights in the Declaration of Independence? You could choose among life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • Why do some states have more representatives than other states? Because of the state’s population — some states have more people.
