Good news for those traveling via public transportation in Riverdale – buses running along the Henry Hudson Parkway West service road beyond West 237th Street are back to normal.
The Parkway had undergone construction last year with modifications being made to the parkway’s retaining wall, which impacted the usage of the service road, according to the New York City Department of Transportation. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority removed the current retaining wall, separating the parkway from the streets, to widen the walkway, rehabilitate the wall and build out the bike path on the lower level of the Henry Hudson Bridge from the Bronx into Manhattan.
In April, pedestrians complained of the blocked sidewalk due to construction which pushed them into the street alongside vehicular traffic at West 232nd Street.
The affected buses include Bx10, Bx20, BxM1, BxM2 and BxM18. Due to construction for a bike lane across the Henry Hudson Bridge, temporary bus stops were created on Independence Avenue by West 236th Street and West 232nd Street.
The detoured buses led buses down Independence Avenue between West 237th Street and Kappock Avenue.
Bus route detours began in January 2023, but returned to regular service in November 2024. The original service routes are being reinstated and bus stops and signs went back to normal as well.
The Henry Hudson Bridge currently does not allow bicyclists but instead, asks them to dismount when crossing the pedestrian bridge. The bike path construction was funded by the $20 million state’s capital program as part of the governor’s MTA Bike Access Bill. The bill, signed in 2021, requires the MTA to promote cycling as a form of transportation and pedestrian foot travel on bridges by adding initiatives for bicycle travel.
The bill led to the proposal of shared bicycle and pedestrian pathways across the city including the Cross Bay Bridge, the Robert F. Kennedy suspended span walkway, the Marine Parkway Bridge and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
