He delighted in telling a story about a weekend afternoon when was wearing a broad straw hat and digging in the garden. A woman in a chauffeured car offered to pay him for gardening at her estate. “I said, ‘Lady, thank you for the offer, but I’ve got a great job here — I even get to sleep with the lady of the house.’”

Tennis and squash were the games Mr. Caputo loved to play, but he was a passionate fan of the Yankees and a long-time Ranger season ticket holder known to all at Madison Square Garden.

He once gave his seats to a friend who reported back that the usher had looked at the tickets and said despondently, “Oh, Mr. Caputo won’t be joining us tonight?” He treasured a ceremonial hockey stick given to him as a thank you by the team.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathy Caputo, a son, Thomas Caputo, grandchildren Kathleen Caputo, Maria Mulvehill and Alexander Freeman and two great-grandchildren, Makenzee Freeman and Adelaide Mulvehill.

He is also survived by Patricia Andersen, Penny Blevins, Pamela Potter and Peter Potter — children by marriage — and five additional grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled at 11a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at Christ Church Riverdale.

Donations may be made to the Maria and Angelo Caputo Scholarship Fund at Williams College or to Christ Church Riverdale.
