Tish Hicks of Kingsbridge graduated from Utah State University with a Ph.D. in psychology.

This year’s graduating class included graduates from the summer and Fall 2021, as well as Spring 2022 semesters.

The college’s statewide campuses have held their graduation ceremonies over the past several weeks. The main campus held their graduation May 5.

Recognized for sports achievements

Yanbu Goodall-Tanco of Kingsbridge has been recognized for their behavior on the wrestling mat. They are one of five Muhlenberg College (Pennsylvania) students selected to the 2022 Winter All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team.

Established by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, all Sportsmanship Team honors a member from each squad who displayed good sportsmanship throughout their career.

Students named merit scholars

Eleven students from three area high schools were named National Merit Scholars.

Each receives a $2,500 scholarship.

Area winners from Horace Mann School include Theodore Ganea, Justin Gurvitch and Ashley Chung.

From the Bronx High School of Science: Tristan Weng, Sean Kerrigan, Jasir Nawar and Ella Yellin.

Winners from Riverdale Country School were Emma Haidar and Savannah Neibart. From Ethical Culture Fieldston School was Sarafina Mathiesen Belafonte.

And from the High School of American Studies at Lehman College was Emma Abell.

The 2,500 merit scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the finalists and their high schools.

From the semifinalist group, more than 15,000 students met the high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

By the conclusion of the 2022 program, some 7,500 finalists will have earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a share of nearly $28 million in college scholarships.

Society nominates Bronx student

Phillip Shen of the Bronx is among 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. A chapter is a unique blend of members from across all disciplines who are the lifeblood of the society.

Their responsibilities are to host and organize events and promote the society’s mission to recognize and promote academic excellence in fields of higher education.

Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, respectively, are eligible for membership.

In the top 10 percent of candidates, graduate students may qualify, as well as faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholar distinction.

The society is the nation’s oldest, founded in 1897 by Marcus Urann, an undergraduate student.
