Née Jacqueline Subkis, Jackie was born and raised in the Bronx, on the Grand Concourse, the youngest of three sisters and a Jewish family. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor’s degree in education and received her master’s of science in education at City College. During her high school and college years, she won a beauty contest, became a fashion model and was crowned Miss Brooklyn College and Miss New York. She met her beloved husband Gary Wolff at 16 years old in Joyce Kilmer Park. They started a family and moved to Riverdale in 1953. She taught elementary school in the South Bronx for many years, and later on, she substitute taught at P.S. 81 in Riverdale where her granddaughters were students. In her early 20’s, she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and became instrumental in the creation of the Ulcerative Colitis Foundation. A prolific reader, a gifted needlepointer and a sharp wit to the end, Jackie lived in Boca Raton, Florida for 25 years before finally returning home to the Northeast where she spent her last years in Connecticut, near her family. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her two daughters, Susan and Caryl, her four grandchildren, Leemore, Yael, Eric and Michael, and two great grandsons, Trent and Max, as well as the wonderful team of nurses and aides at Brookdale Senior Living in West Hartford, Conn. She will be missed, and always loved.
