Press photo editor Duran leaving for West Coast fellowship

Riverdale Press photography editor Hiram Alejandro Durán is heading to the West Coast next month as a CatchLight Local California fellow and Report For America photo corps member. His last day at The Press is May 31.

He is one of three photojournalists to be bestowed with the national honor. Duran will join El Tímpano in greater Oakland. Also receiving a fellowship are Pablo Unzueta, who will work at El Tecolote in greater San Francisco, and Andrea Bruce, a senior local fellow who will develop the hyperlocal newsletter Down in the County in Pamlico County, North Carolina.

For Durán, a Chicano visual journalist from El Paso-Ciudad Juárez, “the freedom to form visuals led by the interests of Latino and Mayan communities, makes the CatchLight/Report for America fellowship at El Tímpano stand out as one of the most inspiring opportunities in photojournalism.”

CatchLight is a collaborative model for visual journalism designed to advance trust and representation in local media and ultimately help inform the public about important issues.

Duran recently received a first place award for Best Art Photo in the 2023 New York Press Association awards for a photo he took regarding a local artist expressing the pain of Ukrainians at the outset of the war.

He has worked for The Press since September 2020.

Shaw’s chiropractor practice lives on

The late chiropractor Dr. Gerald Shaw’s practice will live on under the guidance of a new chiropractor and integrative medicine practitioner.

Shaw, who had his practice in greater Riverdale for more than 40 years, died on Aug. 8, 2022. He was remembered for his devotion to family, his patients and the community through his work with the Kiwanis Club of Riverdale. In fact, the Kiwanis recently awarded a scholarship in his name at its 70th anniversary celebration earlier this month.

Dr. Frank Coppola, who has 40 years in the field, is taking over. He was among the first to set up an aid station with the American Red Cross to treat first responders at Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks.

Julianne Dow, an integrative medicine practitioner, offers Jin Shin Jyutsu, which is very similar to Chinese acupuncture. Previously, she was part of an integrative medicine department at a New Jersey hospital offering JSJ.

Isabel Chandler continues to offer massage at the practice.

Subway weekend service changes

Due to station improvements, there will be no 1 train service between 168 Street-Washington Heights and Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street in the Bronx beginning May 19 at 11:15 p.m. until May 20 at 11:59 p.m.

The 1 trains will run between 168 Street-Washington Heights and South Ferry.

Free shuttle buses will run along three routes, making station stops on the 1 line:

• Broadway between Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street and 215 Street, connecting with the 207 Street A station.

• St. Nicholas Avenue between 191 Street and 168 Street-Washington Heights. Free transfer for M3 service.

• Dyckman Street between Dyckman St 1 and Dyckman St A, overnight only (use M100 days and evenings).

Use A, C for service to/from nearby stations in Washington Heights. For Dyckman Street, use the M100 bus days/evenings. For 207 Street, use the Bx12 bus days/evenings.
