Rivera condemns ICE shooting, calls for action

Posted

State Sen. Gustavo Rivera condemned the shooting of Oscar Belgal in Marble Hill by a U.S.  Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Oct. 8, saying in a statement released that day that, at the scene, he witnessed agents disperse to private buildings. He joined Darializa Avila Chevalier, a candidate for the 15th Congressional District, in speaking with neighbors about their rights, Rivera said.

Rivera said the state legislature passed laws in Albany this year to “keep New Yorkers safe from violations of the constitution and violence in response to the lawless conduct of this rogue agency called ICE.” He demanded the U.S. Department of Homeland Security release any footage of the shooting.

“It is outrageous that despite ICE’s blatant violations of the law, the federal government continues to fund these operations and evade accountability for unlawful incidents,” Rivera said. “Our neighbors should not have to fear being attacked by federal agents.”
