What’s happening with the closed Burger King on Broadway?

Posted

The Burger King at 6007 Broadway shuttered Sept. 27 at 11 p.m., and residents are wondering what will be built in its place.

Public records indicate it could become an Atmosphere Academy location.  The charter school currently has five middle and high school campuses across the Riverdale area.

Atmosphere operations director Sanda Amarasinghe told The Press the school is “in discussion about developing this site,” but can’t give any further details at this time. Amarasinghe said there will be a press release “later on,” but did not specify when, and that the school would keep The Press informed.

City property records show that Atmosphere CEO Colin Greene signed a memorandum of lease, which is a shortened version of a lease providing public notice. The memo was filed Aug. 28. The first steps of changes at the site appear to be beginning, as a green construction fence could be seen around the site Oct. 15. A permit for the construction fence was filed with the city Oct. 7.

Skyline Scaffolding Group, the contracting company listed on signage at the site, declined to comment. Burger King did not respond by press time for further detail on why the site closed, or if they know what it will become.

The Broadway Burger King announced its closure via a sign on the door, thanking the community. It said many of the employees were transferring to nearby Burger King locations.

“We have shared Whoppers, conversations and memories with you,” the sign read. “You filled this store with heart, laughter and Bronx pride! This has been a home because of you!”
