Wilson welcomed as chief judge after confirmation

The New York Senate confirmed Rowan Wilson 40-19 last week to lead the Court of Appeals.

“Today is a historic day for New York,” Speaker Adrienne Adams said in a statement, “as the Honorable Rowan D. Wilson has been confirmed to become New York’s first Black Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. His elevation to Chief Judge will help balance our court at the highest level towards equity and progress.”

State Sen. Gustavo Rivera also shared his support in the Senate’s vote and congratulation of Wilson.

“In Judge Wilson we have found an illustrious and qualified candidate for this position, a highly respected jurist whose distinguished academic background and vast body of work includes over 100 dissents and concurrences.”

Rivera spoke of Wilson’s demonstration of commitment to impart justice for all New York residents, particularly those who are marginalized or lacking power.

“As the first Black New Yorker to hold this important position, Judge Wilson, a trailblazer in his own right, will undoubtedly inspire thousands across New York State to pursue a career in public service and law.”

Congressional app contest winners

U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat on April 18 announced the winners of the Congressional App Challenge, an annual competition for students that celebrate their engagement in STEM and work in computer science.

The winners were Afi Bongo, Ivon Dominguez, Christopher Li, and Julian Pena from Espaillat’s 13th congressional district. He congratulated them and welcomed them to Washington, D.C., for the 2023 House of Code event.

“Empowering students of all backgrounds in STEM is vital to the success of our nation,” Espaillat said.
