If you have driven or walked past Bell Tower Monument within the last three years there is a pretty good chance you’ve seen a woman holding up a sign reading ‘Black Lives Matter,’ ‘Unity Matters,’ or ‘Equal Justice For All.’ Her name is Carol Spivack and over that time she’s come to the monument in Riverdale to bring awareness to various problems in the world.

Student volunteers at the Riverdale Y Monday in the annual MLK Day of Service in memory of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. create hygiene kits for local migrants who have been placed in shelters throughout New York City, including the Van Cortlandt Motel. The volunteers, who were of all ages, worked with the UJA Federation of New York. On Sunday, students promoted environmental awareness and created herb kits for food pantries. The event is held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was Jan. 15 this year.
