Bus ordeals

Posted

To the editor,

While I appreciate readers’ disappointment with Bx7, Bx10 and Bx20 service, I have found bus service in Riverdale far superior to the inadequate service I endured for 18 years in Parkchester. The exception is the Bx10 stop at 231 and Broadway (in the Riverdale direction). Often, one Bx7 after another goes by while endlessly waiting for a Bx10. When a Bx10 finally arrives, it’s a mosh pit to get on. Unless it’s pouring rain, I walk back a couple of blocks to the Bailey Avenue stop so at least I get a seat, but I realize not everyone has the wherewithal to do that.

The more serious issue (for me) is seeing passenger after passenger get on the bus without paying the fare. I’ve even been on the Bx10 when there was an MTA agent on board and did nothing to stop people from just walking on. That being said, fare evasion doesn’t bother me as much as knowing that the freeloaders take seats away from paying passengers.

I wonder how many of the fare evaders would be the first people to complain if services were reduced?
