Don't give up on asylum

Posted

To the editor:

Congratulations to Jamaal Bowman on becoming a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressman Bowman, I write to thank you for signing on to the letter with your colleagues opposing the summary expulsion of migrants/asylum seekers under U.S. Code: Title 42. I encourage you to continue to initiate and support efforts to alleviate the dangerous and miserable conditions wrought by our insufficient, mean-spirited and racist immigration system.

I spent a week at the border working with asylum seekers as a volunteer with Catholic Charities just before Migrant Protection Protocols went into effect.

The stories of violence and poverty, combined with climate change-related agricultural failures, also lead me to urge you to join any and all efforts to recognize and address the underlying issues that result in desperation and flight from the global south.
