To the editor:
I was recently hospitalized at Montefiore Medical Center, and the experience drove home to me how fortunate we are to live near it.
My roommate was a 28-year-old who had gone to an emergency room 150 miles away in upstate New York, and was diagnosed as needing a heart transplant.
He was then taken by ambulance to Montefiore to await the finding of a donor.
Montefiore is a world class facility, and the medicine there comes from an international army of people born here and abroad. Without the contribution of immigrants, our hospital and health care systems would collapse.
