Lois Z. Kobal, a longtime resident of Fieldston, died peacefully Sept. 6. She initially moved into the community in 1950. Her inquisitiveness and intrepid drive to learn more of the world led her to Finland during a semester college break to teach English in Tampere. With her husband of close to 60 years she had intermittent residences in Munich and Frankfurt, Germany, and traveled throughout western and much of eastern Europe following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. During European residences together with their two young children, the family covered approximately 50,000 kilometers, much of it in a camper vehicle. In 2010 she became a member of the prestigious Explorers Club, and assisted in organizing its monthly seminars to teach various skills needed in field exploration, especially in remote areas.

Additionally, her husband’s high school class ‘adopted’ Lois as an unofficial, but stalwart member of his school in the Himalayas, and she contributed to its many reunions held around the U.S.

Upon returning to Fieldston, Lois pursued a career in fabric art which included contributing to a massive quilt incorporating submissions from member nations for the United Nations.

Ever imaginative and creative, she designed several fabric artworks and constructed wreaths, donating them to charity organizations for their funding purposes. She cared deeply about the community and became an Emergency Medical Technician in the Kingsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps, serving evenings on the ambulance and giving presentations about KVAC at neighborhood schools.

Lois is survived by her husband Daniel, son James in Georgia, daughter Diane and her husband, Kevin, in North Carolina, and three grandchildren.

Services were held at Williams Funeral Home, at 5628 Broadway, followed by interment at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
