To the editor:
(re: “Everything I needed to know about working — and life,” Sept. 22)
Thoroughly enjoyed reading Andrew Gelb’s Point of View piece.
It evoked memories of my first job working in a Chicago supermarket at 16.
My manager was Greek, not Irish, but his advice and admonitions echoed those of Pete Neary at Daitch Shopwell. He was a demanding boss who set high standards and expectations for his employees and family, who have continuously owned and operated the business for 58-plus years.
The values and work ethic that he instilled in me at a young age have served me well throughout my professional career and personal life.
Now I’m 72, and he’s in his late 80s. Today, I wrote him a letter to express my gratitude and thanks.
My thanks to Mr. Gelb, as well.
