Torres’ solidarity with lupus community

Posted

To the editor,

May was Lupus Awareness Month and I am writing to express my strong support for Congressman Ritchie Torres and his continued commitment to the lupus community.

As someone living with lupus and an advocate who has participated in 10 National Lupus Advocacy Summits, I have seen firsthand how important it is to have leaders in Congress who not only listen, but truly engage. Each time I see or meet with Congressman Torres, he remembers me and my story. That kind of personal connection is rare and deeply meaningful.

I have been advocating for increased funding for lupus research, and to feel that my voice is being heard in the halls of Congress is incredibly powerful. Congressman Torres has consistently shown a genuine willingness to understand the challenges faced by the lupus community and to support policies that improve the lives of the estimated 1.5 million Americans living with this complex and often misunderstood disease.

His continued engagement with advocates and support for lupus-related legislation demonstrate real leadership. His commitment to joining the Congressional Lupus Caucus, will help ensure that our community continues to have a strong voice at the federal level.

It means a lot to know that someone in Congress is actually listening and cares enough to remember the people behind the stories. That’s why I’m proud to support him.
