Zohran: Make the NYC animal shelter no-kill

Posted

To the editor,

Now that the city election is behind us, I urge our new mayor to take one page from Curtis Sliwa’s platform:

At long last, make the city animal shelter — NYCACC — a no-kill facility.

The ACC has long been a not-so-hidden nightmare. In the first nine months of 2024, the shelter euthanized — that is, killed — approximately 1,007 cats and 1,238 dogs according to Scoop New York. Almost all were healthy and adoptable when they entered the city system.

Each of these lives was a beautiful, unique soul with one chance in this world — a right to live and be loved. A system that destroys animals due to inconvenience or “lack of space” must be replaced. Now.

Budgets are moral documents. New York City is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. At the very least, we should protect our most vulnerable.

Zohran Mamdani, you’ll soon be stepping up as mayor. Those of us who support you embrace your humanitarian policies for struggling residents. With the power you now hold, please protect our four-legged New Yorkers, too.

Janet Clarke
