Howard Kamiel, board head of Amalgamated Housing Corp., dies at 70

Amalgamated Housing Corp. board president Howard Kamiel passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023. He was 70.

Kamiel was a longtime resident of the Amalgamated, his family having moved there in 1970. At the time of his passing he lived with his wife Teresita in the same apartment his family originally moved into. He went to William Howard Taft High School and continued his education at Lehman College, graduating in 1976 with a B. A. degree in accounting. Following his father’s lead, he was a carrier for the United States Postal Service for 34 years, until his retirement in 2008.

Since his retirement, he was very active in service to Amalgamated Houses as well as several other community organizations. He had been president of the Amalgamated Housing Corp. since May 2010. He served as secretary for the Herman Liebman Memorial Fund and was a former president of A.H. Consumers Society Inc.

Also, he was a board member of the Bronx Jewish Community Council and served on its finance committee. He was also on the advisory committee for the Amalgamated-Park Reservoir’s NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) program. Recently, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corp.

Howard leaves behind his wife Teresita, his daughter Stephanie, his brother Marvin and his sister Denise.

Until the stockholders meeting in May, the president’s responsibilities will be taken over by the first vice president Jack Spiegel.

Amalgamated is the oldest limited equity housing cooperative in the United States.
