Gloria J. McGowan (née Cosentino), who was born in the Bronx on March 11, 1932, passed away July 13, 2023, in White Plains. She was 91.
One of four girls born to Italian immigrants Sarah and Dominick Cosentino, she attended Theodore Roosevelt High School, then continued her education at Hunter College.
She had a career in education that spanned several decades — from teaching the children of U.S. soldiers in Germany to Scarsdale Public Schools and the Archdiocese of New York. She was a dynamic presence in the classroom and loved her work.
Once retired, she remained social and active. Some of her happiest times in retirement were with her friends and family. She loved visiting The Berkshires, exploring new places, and meeting people while attending events such as foreign language clubs with her husband Richard.
More than anything, she adored spending time with her cherished grandchildren Colin and Gianna. From school activities, sports and holidays, they were the center of her world. She was their biggest fan and cheerleader.
She will be remembered as a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mom, sister, grandma, aunt and friend. Anyone who met her will remember her warmth and incredible kindness.
Her parents, Sara and Dominick Cosentino, sister Marie Berlingeri, and husband Richard McGowan died before she did.
She is survived by sisters, Teresa Ferraro and Diane Gentile, daughter Sarah Malgioglio (Joe), her grandchildren Gianna Rose and Colin Joseph, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
A wake was held on July 19 at Fred H. McGrath and Sons Funeral Home in Bronxville, and a Mass was held July 20 at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla.
Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
