Posted

Maureen “Whitey” Kelly (nee Carey) passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023. She was 58.

Born to Margaret and Jim Carey on Aug. 1, 1964 in the Bronx, she was the seventh of 10 children. In February 1992, she married Billy Kelly, and together they raised two children — Billy and Shannon — in Riverdale.

Many relatives died before her, including her husband, her parents, her in-laws Mary and Daniel Kelly, her niece Sarah Carey Burns. her sister-in-law Colleen Kelly, and her sister, Kerry Ann Carey.

She is survived by her son and daughter as well as a large extended family, including brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She lived her entire life in Riverdale and was happiest there with her family and closest friends. She dedicated her life to serving the community, spending most of her time at Sid Augerten Field and at Downey’s Bar & Grill. She also ran the North Riverdale Baseball League.

She was always willing to help a friend in need and went to great lengths to make sure that people were taken care of. Some of her famous lines included, “It’s all about the kids,” and “It costs nothing to be kind.”

She was a friend to all who knew her and will be missed dearly by her friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, consider making donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or to the North Riverdale Baseball League in memory of Maureen Kelly.

Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave., handled her arrangements. A Mass of Christian burial was held Jan. 24 at St. Margaret of Cortona Church in North Riverdale. Interment was at Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
