Shine a light for democracy

To the editor,

I’d like to suggest we shine a light in our windows each night at 7 p.m. for half an hour. When Poles supported the Solidarity movement, they did just that — and began to feel their strength in numbers. What a difference it made.

Let’s do the same in our communities, to give one another hope and stand up for democracy.

Every Thursday evening, the Beacon Shine the Light group gathers at West 235th Street and Johnson Avenue at dusk — currently 6:30 p.m., and starting in November, at 5:30 p.m. — for half an hour. If it’s too cold or dark to gather, simply shine a light in your window.

Strength in numbers can help our country remain a democracy.
